Paradox Spirits

Content Warnings

This piece does hold a bit of a shock factor, given the nature of the articles and the discussions throughout the media over the past few years. Within the piece and the collage materials, references to rape, sexual assault, sex, war, racism, the BLM Movement, Active Hate Groups in America (with articles overlaying the map of Hate Groups disproving their theories), obesity, sexism, voting rights, LGBTQ+ Rights, MAGA, police violence, climate change, disease situations, hate against particular religious groups, terrorism, the pandemic, and mental illness. I believe I covered everything that was shown in the articles, being what is discussed in the articles on the collage portions. I wanted to write down everything included, even if it is unintended for me to be harmful personally.

Description

The piece Paradox Spirits, is a three-part, mixed media collage that travels through the political, social, and emotional states encompassing the pandemic. From the left (pre-pandemic) to the right (where we are today in the world), an extreme amount of social and political distrust and divide is seen. Underlying this, literally and within the art, are the emotions of citizens, being Michigan State University acquaintances in this artistic collage, attempting to cope with the tragedies surrounding them.

A special thank you to the late Dr. Bernard Finifter and his family; his collection of magazines, newspapers, and a few textbooks were used as the bulk of my collaging materials.
